I am always drawn to blue and white quilts and this one was definitely a pleasure to quilt.
Anne chose the pantograph called Ripple it was a perfect choice. I love the movement the quilting adds.

Elizabeth’s Quilt
Elizabeth told me that she was inspired by a quilt that she saw while visiting a family member. Sometimes it’s just like that, we see a quilt, admire it and is stays with us.
This causes many a quilter to start collecting fabrics particularly when the quilt was scrappy! This quilt finished as a large queen. Her rules were white on whites with various blues and reds from depression era fabrics.
One word of advice when piecing such a quilt is to stay stitch as you go. What I mean by that is that when you have so many seams esp on your edges that if you stitch 1/8” from the edge it prevents seams from popping open either from handling or being loaded onto a Longarm frame.
I often will stay stitch a quilt for my customers if they haven’t. It makes loading and quilting much easier.
The backing really suits the front though working with it wasn’t always easy on my eyes.
Carols Winter Quilt
It’s spring and this week Liam and Decided it would be safe to finally store the winter boots etc… We have been enjoying our walks in the woods looking at all the new signs of growth!
Carols quilt has a very winter feel with skiers flying down the slopes. We chose the snowflake pantograph which adds a windy, snowy look. The quilting really showed on the black and red checkered flannel backing.
This soft flannel adds such as cozy feeling to the quilt. Though we are hoping not to need very much flannel for a few months!
Cathy’s Quilt
Cathy’s version of the one block wonder type piecing was such a perfect quilt to work on this last while were every day brought rainy grey days. It’s bright green was a reminder that all of the rain will bring out the colours of spring before we know it!
This is a picture of the fabric that she began with. I believe it is by Jane Sassaman .
Her piecing was perfect and so effective!
I used the pantograph Rhododendron that Cathy chose and it was the perfect compliment to this quilt.
When Quilting Makes the Quilt
When Joan brought me this quilt she said that she wasn’t overly excited with it, she had a huge amount of fabric for the backing. A large beautiful print that deserved the extra time to match. I piece many of my customers backings.
I chose the pantograph Flying Paisley and a 40wt linen glide thread.
Quilters are often so surprised at the difference the quilting makes to their tops. In this case we both agreed that the quilting really made it sing!
Piecing Backings and Blocks etc…
The days seem to fly by! It’s been a busy Month of quilting and piecing in between Liam’s school and day to day responsibilities.
This quilt back took a little more time to piece than most as it had a larger motif and called out to be matched. I enjoyed the challenge and feel it was well worth the effort. The quilt is on the frame is close to being completed. More on that soon.
The pineapple blocks have been so much fun! I have a plan for them and a pattern on its way that I am looking forward to jumping into. I will make my sisterhood blocks first and send them on their way!! The papers are printed and ready to start.
Maybe some sewing room tidying is in order as well! I often joke that I am a bit like Jillian Jiggs a story that I used to read to my girls…she would start cleaning her room only to find something else to play with!!….Oh also the fabric to finish my blockheads 3 is on its way, along with some other goodies. Life is so good!
Anne of Green Gables Quilt
How sweet is this customers quilt. She used a Dick and Jane panel along with fabric purchased and saved from a trip to Prince Edward Island.
It will be for a grandchild and I am sure will be cherished.
This quilt arrived with the backing pieced and the exact size of the top. Thankfully my customer also provided more fabric and I was able to expand the backing. In this case I added a strip of the gingham fabric by cutting the existing back 1/3 rd if the way top to bottom and also added borders to the top and bottom.

It seems in my life anyways…every day is a quilt day! If I am not actually quilting …a customer quilt or working on one of my own I am thinking about quilting often.
36 years or so worth of quilting and a lifetime of sewing as I can’t remember not sewing even if it was just playing with Moms notions stash or her machine oh I loved readjusting those settings. I suppose that she had me to thank when her Kenmore just was never working right and she then upgraded to her much loved Pfaff!
My Longarm not only brings me joy but enables me to bring joy to those who for the most part just want to piece quilt tops.
I also finish vintage tops! Carefully sewing fabrics of days gone by into backings and finished off with the final stitches of bindings.
I have often found patterns and ideas online and just have to make it, sometimes just because I know how I would like to quilt them.
Quilts like this one that I just couldn’t get off of my mind so it found it’s way to my design wall and later the Longarm.
And of course my wonderful customers that just let me do my thing with their tops!
Oh and of course there are friends that share their scraps instead of tossing them that cause me to play with more ideas! If you have ever read the book Jillian Jigs you can imagine what that play does to my sewing room!!
Baby it’s Cold Outside…Quilt
Winter comes to a close later this week as far as the calendar is concerned that is…and now this fun and happy king size snowman quilt is off the Longarm and will be heading home before spring!
The quilting is a mixture of ruler and freehand quilting.
A few more favourites and a little of this and that…
Well you know how it goes…when things go well ordering from Amazon it can be amazing. Well my paper piecing plans went out the window…no delivery as promised on Friday and then it was out for delivery yesterday but was a no show despite the tracking that said it was delivered. Oh well thankfully the deadline isn’t this week.
Our weather was fantastic yesterday so it was a good day to be outside anyways.
I shared a few favourite things yesterday and I have a few more so here it goes…
I love these thread picks…not only do I use them for unstitching but they are also fantastic for retrieving stray dark threads under light colours on quilted quilts. It’s like a super tiny and sharp crochet hook.
These scissors all have serrated blades and are super sharp. I use all three sizes fairly often in my work. They aren’t all needed but I do enjoy them.
The navy blue Olfa cutting mat just looks so nice in my sewing room which is why I had to have it..It really is nice to have for cutting lighter fabrics. I use a smaller version when I am trimming small units as it’s easy to turn. I do have some rotating mats as well however I rarely pull them out. I have also over time acquired different size and colour mats that are very useful at times.
It was a very busy week for my Longarm and I. I finished quilting 2 queen size quilts and the sweet little Frozen quilt.
I will hand stitch the binding on the sunshine quilt in the next couple of days and the snowman quilt will require a whole blog post after it’s owner has seen it.
