Susan’s Alaska Quilt

I have been quilting for Susan for several years now and her quilts never cease to amaze me. Her piecing is spectacular and this quilt was no exception! I think the best part of quilting for customers are the friendships that begin with our love of quilting.

When she first saw Edita Sitar’s pattern Alaska, she knew that she wanted to make it! She had begun piecing it pre covid lock downs and delivered it to my deck and left the quilting decisions to me.

Winter 2021

This winter some of my customers who normally head south for the winter have made the choice to stay put. Jeanette also decided to get some of her projects from the past completed.

Jeanettes Stars.
I chose the pantograph called Here and There, the hearts on the backing played a part in that decision. I love the perfect density in the quilting.

Another Block of the Month quilt of Jeanettes from years ago. She commented how much nicer today’s cottons are for quilting. Still this quilted up beautifully and will be used instead of just blocks in a box.

I always offer to trim my customers quilts at no extra charge. Using my 12’ table on my Longarm makes this task a quick and efficient task.

Moda University Kit Club 2009

I have mentioned previously that the year my Longarm arrived I also joined a quilt kit club put out by Moda called Moda University. It was fun to receive a different quilt kit each month…for a while anyways.

I liked having piecing projects at the time that just allowed me to practice both piecing and Longarm quilting. When I first joined, I had no idea how busy my customers would keep me.

My friend Florence started offering to piece some of my kits for me and the Valentines Quilt was one of them.

It’s been an extremely cold and busy week, thankfully the temperatures may be warmer next week still cold but bearable.

Working on this recent block my mind was elsewhere I guess or maybe I was just tired and I trimmed my half square triangles to the finished size which led me to make a much smaller than intended version.

It was meant to be an 8” finished block.

I then proceeded to make another block but decided to give the 1/4 foot a try on my Juki and again night time tired sewing I failed to make sure it was a scant 1/4” so my block is smaller…both blocks will however find their way into the quilt.

It is my quilt and the reason I chose to make it was to have fun. I enjoy making different blocks and using new methods and rulers.

I have the blocks on a design wall which I highly recommend having.

A black a white picture is so helpful with layout.

The latest customer quilt is off the machine and will wait for it to be delivered before I post pictures. Other than just a peek.

My Very Fresh Start to the Day

This is what I woke up to just before 7am

So I checked this…

Which made me so happy that I have a car starter! Which cycled twice today! Because….

This was the temperature while driving this morning…this is not unusual to have weather like this in Thunder Bay in the winter, we do however like to complain about it! I call it perfect quilting weather!

This quilt was pressed and loaded onto the longarm last night and will be quilted today. I always go over my customers quilts, press them and make sure everything is good to go.

My next Moda Blockhead block is almost ready to be sewn together. I made the flying geese units before calling it a day last night. I have a few methods and rulers for making these units and always seem to come back to Deb Tuckers Wing Clippers.

I love the accuracy of trimming down the blocks along with all of the different sizes on each ruler. I especially love the tiny ones!

Joanne’s Quilt

Joanne approached me about quilting a quilt that she was just starting. It was for her Granddaughter and was different than her usual more traditional projects.

When she finished the top and brought it to me, she left the quilting to me. I immediately fell in love with the colours and the backing that she chose.

I love orange and this backing made me think of flames. The top was perfectly pieced and fun to quilt. This was one that was hard to give back.

Basting your Quilt

I was approached late last year about basting quilts on my Longarm. I had heard about this technique before so I did some research and offered to give it a go.

I have friends who use some of the basting sprays instead of pinning. I am leery of not only the glue but the fumes and what they mean for our health.

Maureen brought me three projects and reported back that the basting worked well.

Success! The needle holes from basting will disappear with time or washing.

Joan’s Kaffe Quilt

Joan’s quilt was the first customer quilt of the year. I quilted it during a very grey cloudy week. The brightness of the Kaffe Fassett fabrics with the white background and oh the backing was just the ticket to light things up a bit.

I chose the pantograph by Bethanne Nemesh, called Nemesh Feather Grande which to me really suited the quilt. I also love stitching this out and that particular week I needed some relaxing stitching which it provided.

Unfortunately, the sunlight did not reappear before the quilt was picked up and the only picture of the finished quilt was before it was trimmed. Joan will bind it with the solid green that is in the top.

Lorraines Quilts

As a Longarm quilter I have met many quilters, some are brand new at this art and others have being making quilts long before I knew about them. I have always loved my friendships with women who are ahead of me on this life Journey. Lorraine is a true treasure she is now well into her 80’s and many times has said that this is her last quilt…not long after she will call with just one or two more.

Lorraine moved into a retirement home a couple of years ago, she had told me then she was finished quilting. Not long after she called and said that all the people there talk about is their age and health troubles. So she set up her utility closet as her sewing room and got busy. While she has been a wonderful customer she has also blessed me with so much of her wisdom. Despite many health issues she continues to be a very bright light and her friendship a true gift.
