November/December Life and Quilting

November has sure been a busy month in the studio and the next weeks now that it’s December will be as well. I really consider myself fortunate to be able to spend my workdays helping others complete their quilts!!

There hasn’t been a great deal of personal piecing time and I haven’t felt overly motivated either which in a way is a good thing … I have been percolating different border ideas for my Longtime Gone Quilt. This has been a long-standing project that I had been hoping to quilt over the holidays.

Well, after finishing quilting this customer quilt last night…

I spent some time in my studio puttering and playing with left over blocks in the LTG (longtimegone) bin and looking on Pinterest for inspiration and it’s finally come to me. I have also decided on the quilting design and backing.

Just to remind…here is one of the more recent sections completed for LTG. It’s been such a fun project and I am excited to see it completed.

Also some of the blocks on the design wall. I actually have the top pieced and ready for the final border.

I have a tractor quilt ready to load this morning…Stay tuned!

Melissa’s Sweet Little Girl Quilts

Melissa used the same collection of fabric for 2 quilts that are similar but very different.

I chose to quilt the first one with the pantograph Daisy Swirl.

The design really shows well on the fireside backing.

The second quilt was quilted with the pantograph Hearts and Blooms…

Backed with yellow fireside.

Both quilts are so sweet and will be so snuggly for two little girls who will be receiving them for Christmas.

One Pattern Two Quilts (part 1)

Joanne brought two quilts to me for quilting, both made with the same pattern but made with different styles of fabric.

This first one, made with soft subtle colours (compared to its twin) was quilted with the pantograph Feather Grande by Bethanne Nemish. It is a beautiful and fun design to stitch and the result on both the top and backing are stunning!

Cathy’s Kitty Quilt

Many of my customers request that I decide on the quilting design for their quilts, however they also know that if they have something specific in mind that I don’t already have that I will find it and order it in for their quilt happily adding new pantographs to my collection.

How adorable is this bright and fun quilt!! When Cathy told me about the quilt that she was making for her granddaughter she requested a cat themed pantograph so we discussed the different options and decided on Copy Cat.

The backing is Fireside which I pieced for her. These backings add so much softness and warmth to a quilt and are easy and wonderful to work with!

Look at how beautifully the quilting shows up!!

Shannon’s Elegant Quilt

Elegant! Some quilts have an elegance to them and that rang true on this recent quilt.

Starting with fabric that you love and finding a way to showcase designs in the fabric really can make for an exquisite quilt.

I quilted this quilt with the pantograph Jitterbug which added some fun movement without detracting from the quilt itself.

The backing perfectly suits this quilt.

Most of my customers take me up on my free trimming service. I love how a trimmed quilt looks when it’s maker first sees the quilted quilt but also that it is ready for binding.

Dinasour Quilts (part 2)

Todays quilt share looks very similar to the one that I shared yesterday. They both began with the same panel, however they were surrounded by different blocks and layouts.

Starting a quilt with a panel gives the maker all of the colour clues needed to build the fabric palette.

How much fun is the back of the quilt with this long neck fellow!

It was quilted using the pantograph Popcorn which adds a fun cloud like design without distracting from the piecing.

Dinosaur Quilts (part 1)

Good Monday morning…we woke up to some white stuff this morning! Not enough to shovel and it will most likely melt this afternoon but enough to remind me to get out the winter gear!

It’s so much easier to greet the warmer days of spring and summer along with our nice long days of extra daylight…. But then again it’s so much easier to get lost in my quilting as winter approaches.

I recently completed some double sided quilts, these take a little more time and consideration in loading in order to keep the back as straight as possible.

This quilt is a great example of beginning with a panel and adding on with different blocks to create a quilt top. The backing was inspired I believe from searching on Pinterest.

A Flannel Quilt

Autumn is truly upon us with the leaves with their spectacular colours barely holding onto the trees and quickly covering the ground.

Our days are getting shorter and cooler…soon to be colder. We are truly entering perfect quilting weather. If you are working on a project or have quilts that you are wanting finished for Christmas let me know soon as those spots fill up quickly.

This beautifully pieced quilt made with rich soft flannel was a joy to quilt. The angles inspired a swirl quilting design to add some movement with just enough density to still allow for a soft drape making this quilt perfect for snuggling under!

The backing is a bold checkerboard woven fabric. A backing with such as this requires a little more time and planning in order to keep straight but the effort is well worth the results!

The majority of my customers like to have me trim their quilts for them which I do free of charge …

It’s been a busy Month, with quilting and preparing for winter. The furnace is often running overnight now and it won’t be long before it’s needed during the day.

This was the view from my sewing room window last week…the leaves are falling and the view changes daily.

I have been busy in the studio…here’s a glimpse with more to come.

When most of my time is spent working on customer quilts I like to treat myself with some time sewing for myself before bed.

I am contemplating the final border for my Longtime gone quilt and while I do that I have been playing with the crumbs that have been made in the process of piecing the top.

The fun never ends!

Millie’s Christmas Quilt

The weather here has changed with much cooler nights and the leaves are quickly changing colour. With Fall definitely upon us it’s time to finish Christmas Quilts.

I have been quilting for Millie for several years and often pick up and deliver her quilts. It’s always fun to visit in her quilting room and see all the projects that she has going … and her stash too!

Yesterday I delivered her Christmas Quilt.

I had initially considered adding more snowflakes with my quilting however I decided that adding movement with the panto windswept would add some movement without distracting from the snowflakes on the fabric.

Another consideration was thread, when there is a lot of contrast in the fabrics choosing a thread that blends is often best and a design that won’t be partially cut off on some portions of the quilt is favourable. I used a 60wt thread in white.

I pieced the backing, the stripes worked really well.
