Pyrex

Friendship Pyrex

I have been well known in my quilting circles for my tendency for soft colours. Lately though Red seems to be seeping into my life. I’ve had a couple of beautiful and red quilt jobs come in lately and then last week a friend of Mary’s offered her these pieces of Pyrex which she then gave to me. You might remember my recent post about Hastings where I sadly walked away from a few pieces from this set and only bought the small casserole.  This set seems so happy to me.

Free-motion Quilting

I’ve really enjoyed being re inspired by another Longarm Quilter/Teacher Angela Walters. She writes a great blog and she really makes the modern quilts sing!

After I’ve spent my day working on customer quilts, I will often unwind by sewing a block or trying something new. Angela’s book inspired this little quilt and quilting.

Design Wall

I’ve caught up on my blocks for the Fatquarter Shop Mystery BOM! I’m really enjoying this years blocks.

After my daughters outgrew their bunk beds, I used one of the bed boards to make my design wall, it’s covered with white flannel and has served me well. I like putting new projects up to look up at when I’m working on the longarm.

Playtime

I’ve been busy with customer quilts which I love doing.

I’ve recently been reading some new books and taken a few classes over at Craftsy. Do you ever feel so inspired that you feel like your brain just can’t contain anymore ideas until you start to try some out?

Last night, my Longarm machine was empty and I really didn’t want to load the next job until I could devote the full day to it. So I just started with a piece of backing left over from a friends quilt and just started to play..

Then I decided to quilt a small Convergence quilt I’d pieced last year.

and a little something I made to practice some ideas that I’ve gathered from reading Angela Walters book Free-Motion Quilting. The pattern for this top can be found on Moda Bakeshop and is by Angela Walters. I hope to play on this one next weekend.

Time for some fun!

I love doing the Designer Mystery Block of the Months from the http://www.fatquartershop.com/ each month I receive a nice little package in the mail with more than enough fabric to complete the block and by the time I’ve completed the quilt there’s enough left over for some more fun!

After a busy day yesterday, it was time to break this out. This years quilt is using the Vintage Modern Collection by Bonnie & Camille.

I also had a lot of fun playing with some freehand quilting.

Free motion Fun and Sunshine

Just a little peek at what I have on my machine. I’ve been trying some ideas that I’ve had since reading a great book during my holidays.

I’ve really been loving brighter more cheerful colours lately and this little beauty fit right into that.

We really have had a sunny and hot summer a lot more humid than we are used to but I hate to complain, it won’t last much longer.

oh one more thing..oh how I love these boys! We had a very quick but wonderful visit with Sarah, Jerry and Jerry’s other Grandma. The cousins were pretty happy to have more time together.

Hastings Minnesota

A couple of years ago we decided that when we visited Minneapolis, we would stay the the smaller towns in the outlying areas. I am so not a big city girl. When we discovered Hastings I fell in love! This visit we stayed in Cottage Grove (I just love the name!) and visited Hastings.

I found some treasures at a shop there but only indulged in one small piece of Pyrex. The one I bought is no in this picture but I will share later. I bought the small friendship casserole with the printed lid!

I had a dream

Yesterday I received an email from WestJet a Canadian Airline with an offer that I could fly from here to Hawaii for 300. if I bought the ticket within the next 48 hours. Well I’m not going.

Though I guess my subconscious thought I should and I dreamt last night that I was there, oh there were so many people there. What was I doing though? Collecting Fat Quarters that’s what! Towards the end of the dream I decided to go swimming and ended up floating down a river and dreaming in my dream about more fabric, suddenly it occurred to me that I’d have to find a way to bring my enormous pile of fat quarters home and I woke up.

Now that I’m awake and ready to start the day, it’s time to load a quilt on the longarm and get  quilting and continue on with the fun I’m having with Lucy’s Crab Shack…

Quilting Rules and the Modern Quilting World

I love quilts, I’ve loved quilts from the first time I noticed quilts and my passion for them has only grown.

My first quilting teacher was Eleanor Burns, who I watched on PBS and before a VCR. I would take notes and then make the project. I also read every book and magazine that I could find. As money was tight I made many miniature quilts as the fabric requirements weren’t overwhelming to my budget.

I fell in love with the precision of piecing, I love pressing my pieces and seeing perfectly matched seams and sharp points.  I pride myself in my work.

On the other hand though, I’ve never appreciated the “Quilt Police” I want to make what I want to make, in the colours that I choose and the styles that I like. Quilting should be fun. I often think of a grade 7 teacher who tried to explain to me that purple and orange, and blue and green do not ever go together..that made no sense to me!

Lately, something new has been catching my eye, I’m loving the Modern Quilts that are out there. Colours and styles are changing and I want to play! Sometimes I just want to cut up fabric, sew and press and see what happens. Sometimes I just want simple. More often than not lately I want to try different.

This weekend I played with some Kate Spain Fabric and made my version of a quilt that I’ve seen in a few places. It’s still a work in progress, but it does have my wheels turning with more ideas.

IMG_7247

so simple, just strips sewn together, cut and framed, and solid blocks framed with pieced strips. Such a quick and relaxing project. Perfect for these hot weather days. I love the bright happy colours and patterns in this line too. This is still a work in progress, I haven’t decided on borders. It will be lap sized though.

I know that this project is barely dipping my toes into the water of Modern Quilting but I think there will be more, so much more!!
