A Flannel Quilt

Autumn is truly upon us with the leaves with their spectacular colours barely holding onto the trees and quickly covering the ground.

Our days are getting shorter and cooler…soon to be colder. We are truly entering perfect quilting weather. If you are working on a project or have quilts that you are wanting finished for Christmas let me know soon as those spots fill up quickly.

This beautifully pieced quilt made with rich soft flannel was a joy to quilt. The angles inspired a swirl quilting design to add some movement with just enough density to still allow for a soft drape making this quilt perfect for snuggling under!

The backing is a bold checkerboard woven fabric. A backing with such as this requires a little more time and planning in order to keep straight but the effort is well worth the results!

The majority of my customers like to have me trim their quilts for them which I do free of charge …

It’s been a busy Month, with quilting and preparing for winter. The furnace is often running overnight now and it won’t be long before it’s needed during the day.

This was the view from my sewing room window last week…the leaves are falling and the view changes daily.

I have been busy in the studio…here’s a glimpse with more to come.

When most of my time is spent working on customer quilts I like to treat myself with some time sewing for myself before bed.

I am contemplating the final border for my Longtime gone quilt and while I do that I have been playing with the crumbs that have been made in the process of piecing the top.

The fun never ends!

Millie’s Christmas Quilt

The weather here has changed with much cooler nights and the leaves are quickly changing colour. With Fall definitely upon us it’s time to finish Christmas Quilts.

I have been quilting for Millie for several years and often pick up and deliver her quilts. It’s always fun to visit in her quilting room and see all the projects that she has going … and her stash too!

Yesterday I delivered her Christmas Quilt.

I had initially considered adding more snowflakes with my quilting however I decided that adding movement with the panto windswept would add some movement without distracting from the snowflakes on the fabric.

Another consideration was thread, when there is a lot of contrast in the fabrics choosing a thread that blends is often best and a design that won’t be partially cut off on some portions of the quilt is favourable. I used a 60wt thread in white.

I pieced the backing, the stripes worked really well.

Butterfly Quilt

Sometimes the fabrics in a quilt top guide my choice of pantograph and this sweet quilt called for butterflies in my opinion.

The quilting really stands out on the solid fabrics!

The backing used is Cuddle fabric, so really only the indentation of the quilting shows. Cuddle has a lot less stretch than Minkee does so it is a little easier to handle though both options are great options for backings.

Under the Sea Quilt

I have recently quilted several quilts that the maker has chosen Cuddle fabric for the backing. This super soft snuggly fabric quilts up beautifully and I happily piece theses and all backings free of charge to for my customers. Why? I first began this service shortly after I began quilting for others as many found it challenging to piece large backings…I continue to do so.

This fun quilt was put together by a Mother and Son project!

The thickness of the cuddle fabric really showcases the quilting design.

Tumbling Blocks Quilt and Source

A quilt that I made in 2013 has been on my mind lately. I remember my friend Alva showing me the technique and she was determined that I should try it out.

I started out making only some coloured blocks.

Which grew to more blocks…

They lived on my design wall for a while until I decided on a final layout. I added the gray blocks, the gray fabric was the same gray only different dye lots. This was fabric purchased from Fabricland so I don’t recall the brand.

I still love everything about this quilt!

Today this tutorial was blogged about on Teresa Down Unders blog and it came up on different feeds as well.

The Perfect Ten Quilt

Several years ago there was a wonderful quilt shop in Grand Marais Minnesota. It’s funny now that we all called it Crystals Shop (the owners name was Crystal) though I am sure that it had another name.

Crystal carried a lot of batiks and had developed a pattern and sold many many kits called The Perfect Ten, I recently had the pleasure of quilting one for a customer.

My customer has two daughters who also quilt and they had challenged each other to get their ufo’s complete. Mom won.

The backing was such a perfect choice.

Living in Thunder Bay, many quilters here have often enjoyed day trips across the border for a drive along Lake Superior for shop hops. We now have one in Lutsen to visit along with Quilters Corner in Beaver Bay.

Monkey Quilt

How can you not smile when you look at this fun quilt! The fabric choices were perfect and it was such a joy to quilt!

It was quilted using the Pantograph Waterworld. I like a well quilted baby quilt with the hope that the quilt will be well loved ad will withstand the many washings that are need from being well used.

Moose Panel Quilt

Quilts that begin with the inspiration of a panel have become very popular it seems. It’s understandable with the amazing prints available.

This recent quilt is a great example of using a panel to pull colours from and making blocks and borders to grow the quilt. I used the pantograph Star-swirl to quilt it.

Diane’s Quilt

It was such a pleasure to complete this quilt for Diane, mostly because I knew how special this quilt is to her.

Her piecing on this quilt was exact and her borders laid flat…the paisley designed fabric spoke to me and I chose the pantograph flying Daisy.

I don’t often bind customer quilts but did finish this quilt completely, it made me happy that I could. Diane has always from the time I met her been a cheerleader in living your life and is someone who makes such a positive difference in this world! She inspires me 😊
