Spring Break and Life

No actual quilting happened here yesterday!

It’s spring break here, and with that My daughter and family are here from Texas! I had been hoping that we would still have good snow for their visit and my wish was granted!

Jerry is almost 13 and hadn’t been here in the winter since he was a little guy. He and Liam made fast friends again and made the absolute most of yesterday,

The most quilty thing that happened was that I picked up my two rolls of batting from http://bordergiant and having both Liam and Jerry with me they each carried a roll into my studio for me.

The rest of my day involved food…and watching boys have fun!

Jerry is a fast learner and after a few runs through the trails with Liam driving he was off on his own machine. They snowmobiled for 4 1/2 hours!

After Bison Burgers for supper there were nerf gun wars, some serious rough house play, Jerry teaching Liam self protection moves and so much laughter!! It was a full, busy day ending with the boys having a hot sauna, hot chocolate and no complaints about heading to bed…the grandparents weren’t far behind.

Snow, Stellar, Quilting and Life

Well…yes it’s still snowing there is even more forecasted for Wednesday yet again! The trees are heavy with snow and an attempt to walk to the back of our property failed due to it being waist deep!

The good news is that it’s not too cold, the snow is wet and heavy to shovel but it did feel good to be outside this morning and the sun was trying hard to break through the clouds. hopefully the sun will shine tomorrow.

11:30 am April 18 2022

On Friday I spent some time pressing and started cutting the fabric for Stellar, the third quilt from Season 4 of the Color Collective. It is comprised of 2 paper pieced blocks that mirror each other.

Marilyn’s third half square triangle quilt left this morning. Theses quilts are full queen size and such fun to look at. Her stitching is so precise and her quilts are always square.

Folded in half

I am presently quilting a super fun 2 sided quilt that is nice and bright! I always press the tops and backs before loading, it’s worth the extra time in my opinion. This quilt like the Minecraft Quilt has a very pieced and fun backing.

Fun Projects and Waiting…

Well another snowy day, we woke to another 5”s of very wet snow. While the trees did look pretty, we had a near miss of a snow laden tree leaning on our power line…thankfully with a little help from Erik with less snow it bounced up a bit.

And a little later in the morning…

I am normally a pretty patient person, but the snow is stretching me though there is not a thing I can do about it….we are also waiting for our newest grandchild to arrive any day…I am not feeling patient about that either.

There is also more snow predicted for next week!

I have finished quilting the half square triangle quilt I wrote about in my last blog and have the next ready to quilt. It always amazes me how even in 18 years of quilting for others there are rarely duplicates!

This quilt is spectacularly brilliant! Just what’s needed to work on a gray snowy day!

I am itching to start project three of the Color Collective! It’s called Stellar, designed by Tara Faughnan.

Do you ever find it hard to break up a bundle and start cutting it up, I do but I know that it will will be fun and once I start it will be hard to stop… that might be part of my hesitation.

April Snow 2022

April is supposedly the month of showers that bring May flowers. After what has felt like an extra long winter this one has been stubbornly hanging on.

I won’t lie and I am sorry for those west of here but I am thankful that the predicted blizzard is bypassing Thunder Bay! This Wednesday they are predicting rain and lots of it…so fingers crossed it doesn’t end up being snow.

Opps I may have spoken too soon looks like Thursday snow this week…

Spring is really the only season that I wish would come sooner than later!

When Liam and I arrived yesterday…I pick him up from school on Mondays and he spends the night…the first thing he did was head for the snow! The Temperature was 8C and with the sun shining it was very pleasant outside.

He does love the snow out here and was so happy to see it was still here!

Last night I came across pictures from a year ago…Liam was with us doing school virtually… he was standing close to the same spot.

April 17, 2021

That day he rode his bike and enjoyed his first ice cream cone of the season, sitting on the deck…. Though 2 days later… April 19, 2021!

The snow has been melting and in a few weeks we should be done with it.

Another snowy Wednesday…

It’s April 6th…we still have an abundance of snow! Guess what…we are again under another snowfall warning!

This is my morning view from the picture window…

Thankfully, it’s a day that I am able to stay home and I plan to do just that.

April has been a busy month so far, as was March. My Longarm and I have been busy!

I am slipping in a little baby quilt making daily now as the date of arrival is quickly approaching!

So the other night I hoped to finish piecing the backing. I was tired and didn’t notice that the print was off grain until I had sewn it and laid it out on the floor!

Can you see it? It was late at night, so I decided just to sleep on it.

The next morning I took it apart and using once upon a day home ec lessons straightened the grain. The print is so adorable…it’s a Cotton + Steel called Flower Market and I was determined to use it.

So much better!
The finished backing.

It was worth the extra time it took to match up the design while piecing this backing.

The quilt is loaded on the Longarm, I am hoping to use this snow day to finish it!

One tip for others who longarm. I keep a few pieces of trimmed wide backings from personal quilts and baste them to the top of backings that might be short as a leader preventing unpleasant surprises at the end of the quilt!
