More Progress

My new sewing room really is coming together! I am loving the colour that I chose and the flooring that is almost finished being installed (the plan is for today!!) and the baseboards too!

Thank you to Taylor and Josh for so much help and to my grandson Liam who would like to be the apprentice too.

I chose to put in a florescent light fixture with daylight bulbs which give me true colour. I love the amount of light I have with hardly any shadows.

I’ve purchased 2 sheets of rigid foam insulation that is 8’x4’ that will become my new design wall.

I have a quilt on the longarm and several to follow, as well as this quilt that will be finished soon.

Wolf Song is a kit purchased from http://www.rushintailor.com/ the kit is for a twin but I will be growing it into a queen. The pattern is by Lisa Moore.

Happy New Year! What’s Happening?

I know this is late and somehow that last month just moved along faster than I was able to keep up!

One thing I love about January is the calm that seems to take hold after the busyness of the Holiday’s

I’ve been busy with a few things lately, one being painting and preparing my new sewing studio.

I will still have my longarm studio downstairs but I’ve been transforming my Master Bedroom into my sewing room/classroom.

The lighting is excellent, night-time sewing will be a breeze which is a wonderful thing this time of year when it’s dark so early in the day and on those grey cloudy days.

I will have a larger ironing station/cutting station and an 8’x8’ design wall, as well as an area I can finally hang finished quilts for photographing.

I’ve painted the room a soft and lovely yellow and now I’m just waiting for the baseboards to go in and the furniture moved. Oh and there will be so much more storage room for my stash.

I’ll be sharing pictures as well as more about what my plans are for this year.

Snowmen Table-runners

Ann called the other day wondering if I could quilt these table-runners that she had made. She had originally planned to quilt them herself but changed her mind.

They posed a slight problem in that they had already “been pillow-cased” with the backing so I couldn’t attach them to the longarm leaders as I normally would. No problem, I just pinned additional leaders to them.

Alpine Wonder

I first remember seeing this quilt in a Keepsake Quilting Catalogue and thinking wow that is a cool quilt.

When Jeannie asked me if I could quilt hers this week instead of her quilt that was waiting next in line here, I was excited to work on it.

(excuse the chalk lines, I use school chalk to mark guidelines for myself, they are easily removed with the help of my compressor)

The tree was made using trapunto and both the tree and sky were made with gradient fabrics for a wonderful 3D affect.

Alva’s Flannel Quilt–Block Tutorial

I’ve had several people ask me for this pattern. My friend Alva has demonstrated the block at Thunder Bay Quilters Guild.

One note about her quilt is that the fabrics came from a fatquarter bundle of flannels.

Each block consists of:

4 different 7 1/2”x3 1/2” rectangles
4 solid 7 1/2”x 1 1/2” strips
1 3 1/2” square

1. Sew on black strip to each of the rectangle prints

2. Choose your layout for the block and one of the rectangles with the black (or your solid) to the square. HERE IS THE IMPORTANT STEP: only sew half way from the bottom edge.

3. Press this section. (Press all seams to the black strip) and sew your next rectangle as shown:

4. Continue with the next 2 rectangles:

5. and finally finish the first seam. Alva added black sashing’s to her quilt when joining her blocks.

Now that I’ve made a block I am going to have to add this to my quilts to make list.

I’d love to see other versions, so if you make a quilt using this tutorial and would like me to quilt it this winter I will supply your batting! Just mention this tutorial. (This offer applies only to January and February 2013.)

A very busy and productive week…

Last week flew by, I had a visitor for the week which made each day full and busy…

While Liam was here the kids asked me to try to capture his 10 month picture (tail end of his 10th month) on his quilt. He started walking a few weeks ago and ever since he has been in constant motion.

One day though I caught him sitting still, he had pulled an empty laundry basket off of the table and climbed in..

While visiting Grandma he also managed to cut 2 molars so the first few days of his visit were pretty tough but all in all we managed well.

During naps I was able to finish a few customer quilts

this pile shows 5 of the 6 that I quilted for Emily..one day after she has seen them I will be post some of her quilts!

I also managed to finish this queen size quilt that shows what a Longarm Quilter can do with a pre-printed fabric! This is quilted using Michelle Wyman’s Star Swirl Pantograph.

I was also able to finish a custom Thimbleberries King Quilt that I forgot to take pictures of as well as a flannel lap quilt for Alva which will be shown in my next post.

Did I mention that after Liam went home I went to bed early and slept late!

Proud to be Canadian Quilt

Another beautiful quilt by my customer Jeannette. (Last year I quilted her Texas Quilt)

Her piecing is so precise and her applique again was perfect. For the Mounties she used Ultra suede which really brought them forward (and was no trouble to quilt through) I used Superior’s Monopoly thread to quilt the details in the Mounties.

For the Maple Leaf and the cream background I quilted a Pantograph called Ground Cover by Keryn Emmerson, changing thread colours between Red and Cream. The trees were all freehand quilted with Superiors Rainbow in a variegated green.

It’s always so much fun when I take a quilt off the Machine to see the back, I used Superiors Bottom Line in my Bobbin and I love how the colour changes on the Top are not reflected on the back.
