My Version of Summer Moon Quilt

Two things happened to inspire me to make my version of Carrie Nelson’s Summer Moon quilt. The first of course was seeing her book along with people posting pictures of their blocks on social media. The second was when my friend Betty gifted me with all of her scraps from her Fire Moth quilt.

I have always enjoyed piecing small pieces and the 5 inch blocks caught my eye. I had some leftover white fabric that was enough for something small so I set some rules for my little project. I would only make the small blocks and I had to use Betty’s scraps and the white fabric on hand. I began piecing the blocks on weekend mornings…and then it was my quilt night project (more about that in my next post)

I had initially bordered the first blocks however as the blocks grew my vision of the quilt changed. Once all of the blocks were on my design wall I drew out the additional piecing for each block.

I had the perfect backing in my stash and slipped this little project onto my Longarm between customer quilts and quilted it using the Curls Pantograph. I did purchase the binding though I could have dug through stash but it was fun to bring my project onto our mobile quilt shop Fuelled by Fabric and find the perfect finish!

I do intend to make the full Summer Moon quilt and am considering using my stash of depression era fabrics.

Revisiting Summer Wind a Low Volume Quilt

Several years ago on a little March Break trip across the border, my youngest daughter and I saw a fabric line in a shop that we had to have along with a pattern that the fabric had been made into. The fabric line was called Seaside Rose of Three Sisters for Moda fame and Katie and I collected a lot of it. I have made several quilts with it over the years but my favorite still is the one I made with Carrie Nelsons Summer Wind Pattern (I have made a few more with the pattern since in a few different colorways).

I have noticed lately that many people are making what are now referred to as Low Volume Quilts and realized that this one falls into that category though it was made so long ago. It is so soft and gentle looking and maybe that’s what drew me to the quilt in the first place as it was made during a very difficult and hard time in my life’s journey.

On another note it sure is nice to see green grass even sprinkled with dandelions even if only in pictures…we still have about 3 feet of snow…

Bloggers Quilt Festival

I made this quilt using a pattern called Summer Wind, I had originally made it with a different fabric collection and in a different season of my life. The first quilt was pieced in a 3 day marathon session, when I needed something to completely take my mind of some challenges that life was throwing my way. I had always intended to use the pattern again and when I found myself with a stash of Gypsy Rose from Fig Tree Quilts I knew I had my next Summer Wind Quilt.

When I first posted pictures of this quilt that I made for Erik’s Daughter Megan, the pattern designer Carrie Nelson commented that she thought its name should be Summer Gypsy, which I really liked and renamed the quilt.

One of the things I really love about this pattern is that you start in the centre and work your way out border after pieced border.

Megan has decorated her room about this quilt. She really has great taste in colours and has done an amazing job (I’ll see if she’ll let me share a peek)

I used a pantograph called here and there to quilt it. I think this design flows beautifully across the quilt and I personally think it looks like hearts which is another reason I chose it.

I’m adding this last picture to show you the quilt I made for Megan to go with her older bedroom, she chose the colours for that room herself too. It’s interesting how our tastes change over the years isn’t it.
